My Process, Part 1: Choosing A Subject

Before I paint my first step is choosing a subject. That may not sound like a challenge to many, but for me it often is. I start by looking through the photos on my phone and printing those I find most compelling. What am I looking for, exactly? Something that has a strong light and dark pattern might grab my attention. An image with a surprising or unexpected view or perspective may intrigue me. Structures, lines, and angles often spark my excitement. A glimpse of something solitary or remote may stir me to contemplation, this too, may call to me. 

 There is a listening that has to take place, listening to my own voice and what I love. It is a temptation and an easy way out to focus on what other artists are painting, with success, I might add. Sometimes, I think, I can do what they are doing. But it may be their path. I can be happy for them and give thanks that they are shining. But the question is, can I be brave and follow a path that is for me? Is it trending; that is not my concern. This is when I hope I take a moment, then choose what I like. My path might be only a whisper or a hint. This is where the seed of the painting is first planted. There are no guarantees, it may grow and it may not. It may look like what I imagined and it may not.

Then, the thought, I'll give it a try. Let's see what happens. 

That's how I start, with my passion, a hope, and a risk.

For me, this is where the journey begins.
